COUNTDOWN - 18 WEEKS!
Happy Saturday!!
In addition to the usual weekly schedule, I am also posting the information on shin splints as Carol and I both had them the first time we walked outside! Brings back my old track days of ice, Ben Gay and Saran Wrap!!!
Your Training Schedule for This Week:
Monday Rest
Tuesday 3 miles Easy walking
Wednesday 15 minutes Moderate cross-training
Thursday 5 miles Moderate walking
Friday 30 minutes Easy cross-training
Saturday 7 miles Easy walking
Sunday 6 miles Easy walking
Training Tip of the Week: Shin Splints
Shin splints is a term broadly used to describe pain in the lower extremity. Most commonly it refers to medial tibial stress syndrome. People will describe pain in the inner part of the lower half of the shin. At first the pain may begin at the start of exercise and then decrease after a warm up period. However, with continued exercise the pain can become constant.
Shin splints are caused by overuse from repetitive activity. Walking increases the size and strength of your calf muscles. The calf muscles on the back of your leg can create an imbalance of forces on your anterior leg and cause inflammation. To prevent shin splints, adequately warm up your anterior and posterior leg muscles before exercise. See the stretching tips in your Breast Cancer 3-Day Handbook.
If you experience shin splint pain, decrease your walking mileage and focus on stretching. Start with the runners lunge stretch for the calf or put a towel around your foot and pull your toes up towards your head. If you can, try sitting on your knees and feet to really stretch the front part of your leg. Be careful because this is hard on your knees. Freeze water in a paper cup and ice your shins right on the bone for five minutes, three times a day. Consider adding an over-the-counter arch support and check your shoes for adequate shock absorption.
Once you have stretched and your pain has decreased, begin strengthening exercises. Start with toe taps, first straight up and down and then right and left. Add heel raises and toes raises. Finally, put a towel on the floor and, keeping your heel on the floor, use your toes to grab an edge of it, pulling it towards you. Try to increase your walking gradually and alter your walking surfaces to include grass, dirt and track surfaces as much as possible. If your symptoms do not improve or get worse, see your doctor for evaluation.

Fantabulous Fun at Frankies!!!
So excited! Carol and I went last night to Frankie's Pub and Pasta to check it out for the fundraising event! We are officially "on the books" for Saturday,
May 23rd. That is the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend but I still think we should be okay! The place is really neat!! We are going to try to sell 300 tickets. Carol knows lots of people out that way and it is the day after Lori's Birthday so she should be able to get lots of people to come out and celebrate the anniversary of her 29th with us!!!
Frankie's will donate our meal (Ziti, 1 Meatball, Salad and Bread) and we can charge whatever we want for the ticket price. Alcohol, pop, coffee (any drinks, really) will not be included but available for purchase. We can bring in our own entertainment (Carol and I have a few things in the works) in addition to any other fundraising options that we choose. We are thinking reverse raffle with side boards and maybe some basket raffles etc. (Does anyone feel comfortable soliciting prize donations from people? I think a silent auction or basket raffle would be great but we have to get the prizes! This is not something I have ever done before but I am willing to step outside of the box and give it a try!) The most important task right now is to get tickets printed and I have a possible lead for that to follow up on. If anyone else has ticket printing connections, please let me know!!
I think it would be a great plan for us to have matching team shirts for these events!! Lori, are you still up for T-Shirts and Hats?!
BTW- After talking to the manager at Frankie's(Rick), we had dinner and the food was spectacular!! I think it will be a great evening!
I think that Brian and I will plan our cookout/cornhole tourney etc for either July 11th or 18th....what date works for everyone?
Any updates on dates for the other events we're considering?
I would like to try to plan another get together in the very near future (look at you calendars for April) but in the meantime, this blog will be our best means of communication! Feel free to post any thought, suggestions etc!! The 16 week mark is around Easter....how 'bout a training walk April 18th, early morning? Can you all make it? Location to be determined!
Off to do math homework with Brandon! I am definitely not smarter than a 4th grader when it comes to math! Oy!
Have a good evening!

Whew! Time...it is a'flyin'!!

I was actually able to get outside and walk a few days last week since the weather was so nice! It is VERY different than being on the treadmill!! I am looking forward to being able to get outside more often as the weather gets nicer!
Hoping you all are having a great week!!

I will keep my fingers crossed for your moms cousin! I plan to laminate some pics of those that I am walking for and pin them somehow to myself for the walk! Lots of people did that last year and it was pretty neat!
I got my socks today! They are VERY thick...If you are planning to get a new pair of shoes, I would definitely wait until you have these socks if you ordered them! I think that I am going to go to either Vertical Runner in Hudson or Achilles in Mentor and get fitted for shoes. If anyone else is interested,I have some info on a team fitting session! I will bring it on Monday!
Brandon snuck this when I wasn't paying attention! Praying for some nice weather soon so we can get outside!!!

Various Comments
Maria - I'm sorry to hear about your friends diagnosis. It does piss you off doesn't it...
My mom's cousin was recently diagnosed as well. She's already had surgery and is awaiting the results of the tumor biopsy to see what stage she's in and what treatments lie ahead.
This certainly does give us more ammunition to be successful in all our efforts.
Thanks Lori for the link to those amazing looking socks. I also ordered three pairs and I can't wait to try them!

Meeting
Hi Ladies!
I attended the Team Captain meeting tonight and came away with a few things....a few ideas for fundraising, training, etc....but more importantly, a renewed sense of determination. There was a feeling that came along with completing the 60 miles last year that Lori can attest to and I can't wait for Angela and Carol to experience this year! The feeling that we are all involved in something so big and so important. The message that in the 90 minutes I was in the meeting, 34 people would be diagnosed. 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. I came away from this meeting with that feeling.
This year will be particularly personal for me. In my past, I have had several family members that have been diagnosed....some I have lost and some are brave survivors....recently, I received word that a friend of ours has been diagnosed. She has a 10 year old son that is in my daughters class. For some reason, this news struck me very hard.....she is my age, her kids are my kids age.....now, not only has this disease attacked my family but, it is going after my friends and, pardon my french but, that really pisses me off! So, it is with renewed determination that I will attack fundraising and training and I am so thankful to have you all as a part of the team!
I am really looking forward to Monday at Cheesecake Factory!!!
BTW - We all have numbers "on the board" for fundraising! Angela at $1890.00, Lori $1020.00 Carol - $200.00 and me $400.00. You are all doing a great job!!

Socks!!
Thanks for the link Lori! I just ordered 3 pairs of the socks!! They got me with the claim of NO BLISTERS in a customer comment!!!! I walked 5 miles on Saturday and 4 miles yesterday and started to get some "hot spots"...I never thought I would be so picky about socks!

A little change in plans! Lori has had something come up and she is not able get together on the 13th.....how about the 16th, 17th or 18th? Please let me know if any or all of those dates work and I will pick the one where all of us are available! Cheescake Factory at Legacy Village would be a good mid-point if it's okay with all of you.
