Fundraiser at Frankie's Pub

Last Saturday night's raffle and Chinese auction held at Frankie's Pub in Eastlake was a huge HUGE success. Carol was able to raise all the money she needed to walk in this one event. Great job Carol getting everyone out and kudos to Maria who provided plenty of assistance. Most of all a huge thank you to everyone who came out to support the walk. As you can see fundraising can be lots of fun too!!!

3 Day Training Event at Aurora Farms

Angela, Maria and I met bright and early last Saturday morning to walk 10 miles around Aurora Farms. This was an official 3Day Training event and there were about 12 of us walking. It was amazing how fast the 10 miles went by. It makes such a huge difference when you have people talking and laughing. We even had a few crew members cheering us on; blowing bubbles, waving signs, handing out stickers and suckers. It was a little taste of things to come. When we were done with the official walk we were treated with a VIP shopping package filled with coupons for the shops. This of course gave us all the incentive we needed to add an 11th mile (of shopping)!

The best I've ever had! Sadly, The girls that run the shop lost their mother to breast cancer a few months ago and they sent us much heartfelt support and thanks for our efforts!

Carol is on vacation this week so I will talk to her when she gets back and see what details she has to add. In the meantime, I received the tickets last week and I think they really turned out nice! I also put out an invitation on Facebook and have gotten a few people that might attend! A friend of ours followed up that invitation by inviting all of her Facebook friends and Carol thinks that she will be able to get people as this is her "neck of the woods" so, hopefully, we will have a nice turnout! We need to talk about what to do about baskets, etc. Carol has come up with some really excellent ideas that she and her husband are looking into!!

June 30th Beef O'Bradys
Angela is working with the people at the restaurant to create flyers and get this event up and running! Details posted as they become available!

Team Meeting:
I really would like to have another team meeting when all of us are available so that we can go over some of these things! I know it's hard with everyone's crazy schedule but how are you all looking for one evening the week of April 27th? At this point, I am available any night after work!!

Hoping you are all enjoying this beautiful weather!!

Monday, April 13, 2009

What the heck happened to the last week! My apologies for not posting! Things have been just a bit crazy!!

There are a few 3 Day training events on the horizon that Lori mentioned to me this morning....I would like to plan on the April 25th in Hudson and May 16th at Aurora Farms!! Is anyone else interested!! You need to go to your 3 Day webpage and RSVP. I think it will be nice to hook up with other walkers! There must be a lot more walkers from this area this year as there weren't any training walks in our area last year! Here is the information from the website:

The tickets for the event on May 23rd at Frankie's should be in any day! I think I may be able to sell a few. Carol is on a cruise this week (so jealous!) but will sell more when she gets home. We are still working on entertainment as my original plan did not pan out! I will post something on Facebook too and see if anyone is interested!!

Angela, you had asked about shoes....Brian went out and got me a pair of Reebok Running Shoes and my sister got me some lightweight Adidas socks for my birthday and, together, they are working out great! No blisters (except the tips of my toes!)

Brittany has been amazing in walking with me!! She walked 8 miles with me over the weekend!! Brian and Brandon "pooped out" before she did!! I am really proud of her!

Beef O' Brady's Event

Mark your calendars ladies, June 20th is confirmed for the Beef O' Brady's event in Twinsburg.
I spoke with Kristen this afternoon and she is going to mock up a flyer and email it to me for review.

The only thing in question right now is the time. Typically on Saturdays, they like to have these events in the afternoon. Happy hour from 4 - 6 is the latest end time they have ever allowed. However, she is going to see if she can clear an all day event and allow our group to use the flyers from open to close (11 - 10 pm). We do not have to be present all day. We can choose a chunk of time in which we'll be present if we want to have raffles, etc. Seems pretty flexible.

Anyway, once we finish the flyer we just have to print, hand it out, post on our blog, etc. (The only thing they ask is that we not stand at the door and solicit guests. Guests have to come in with the flyer in hand.) At the end of the night, they will tally up the totals and write us a check for 20%.

Kristen suggests getting the flyer out 1 month in advance. I plan on asking my friends, relatives to save the date now.

Also, they do have an overhead PA system which we are allowed to use, we can stand at the hostess station and greet people as they come in, and they'll place a large table at the front of the room for anything we plan to raffle. They do not have a problem with us letting outside guests (ones without flyers) know about the raffles we may do.

Will share more details as they become available - for now, save June 20th!!!!

Thanks,
A~

Catch-Up

I'm sorry I've been out of touch. I hope you all received my email from yesterday.

So, my new treadmill came last Friday and it has been a wonderful thing for those required walks on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I walked 5 miles last night - no blister issues, just some slight inflammation in the knees which went away after I stretched and started to relax. This morning, I feel great. My old shoes seem to be working well but I would like to try and get a second pair - any news on a possible team fitting? The socks I bought along with Maria feel great on my feet but they are thick so I've been training with a second pair of Nike socks that I've had forever and they seem to be working just as well. I agree that walking outside vs. walking on the treadmill is completely different. I seem to have more symptoms of things - knees, hot feet, etc. when I walk on the treadmill. I'm hoping for warm, sunny weather this weekend so we can complete our 11 miles is it?

In response to the "hot spots" - this is what I would do - which doesn't really mean much but here it is anyway: I would put Campho-Phenique on it and let your feet get some air. Then when you're ready to walk, I would put one of those small circular Band-Aids just in that spot. My thinking was it would provide a barrier on the hot spot without impeding your toe with a big heavy Band-Aid. Thoughts?

Maria - I'd like to call Beef O'Brady's today and see which date in June they may have available. You mentioned a class reunion on one of those Saturday's...can you remind me which one? I think it may have been in our dinner meeting notes - I'll look back at that as well.

Hope everyone is well - have a great weekend!

Shoes and Socks!

I walked 6 miles last night on the treadmill in my new shoes that Brian got for me and the new socks that I ordered.....I have some pretty nasty blisters on the tops of my toes but am not sure if it's related to the socks or shoes or just the fact that I haven't walked that distance is a while! I think I am going to try to do another 6 (7 if feeling particularly ambitious!) tonight in both and see how it goes! I wonder, how does one go about addressing a "hot spot" on the top of a toe!!!! Anyone else having these issues?
Have a great day!

COUNTDOWN - 18 WEEKS!

Happy Saturday!!
In addition to the usual weekly schedule, I am also posting the information on shin splints as Carol and I both had them the first time we walked outside! Brings back my old track days of ice, Ben Gay and Saran Wrap!!!

Your Training Schedule for This Week:

Monday Rest
Tuesday 3 miles Easy walking
Wednesday 15 minutes Moderate cross-training
Thursday 5 miles Moderate walking
Friday 30 minutes Easy cross-training
Saturday 7 miles Easy walking
Sunday 6 miles Easy walking

Training Tip of the Week: Shin Splints

Shin splints is a term broadly used to describe pain in the lower extremity. Most commonly it refers to medial tibial stress syndrome. People will describe pain in the inner part of the lower half of the shin. At first the pain may begin at the start of exercise and then decrease after a warm up period. However, with continued exercise the pain can become constant.

Shin splints are caused by overuse from repetitive activity. Walking increases the size and strength of your calf muscles. The calf muscles on the back of your leg can create an imbalance of forces on your anterior leg and cause inflammation. To prevent shin splints, adequately warm up your anterior and posterior leg muscles before exercise. See the stretching tips in your Breast Cancer 3-Day Handbook.

If you experience shin splint pain, decrease your walking mileage and focus on stretching. Start with the runners lunge stretch for the calf or put a towel around your foot and pull your toes up towards your head. If you can, try sitting on your knees and feet to really stretch the front part of your leg. Be careful because this is hard on your knees. Freeze water in a paper cup and ice your shins right on the bone for five minutes, three times a day. Consider adding an over-the-counter arch support and check your shoes for adequate shock absorption.

Once you have stretched and your pain has decreased, begin strengthening exercises. Start with toe taps, first straight up and down and then right and left. Add heel raises and toes raises. Finally, put a towel on the floor and, keeping your heel on the floor, use your toes to grab an edge of it, pulling it towards you. Try to increase your walking gradually and alter your walking surfaces to include grass, dirt and track surfaces as much as possible. If your symptoms do not improve or get worse, see your doctor for evaluation.

Fantabulous Fun at Frankies!!!

So excited! Carol and I went last night to Frankie's Pub and Pasta to check it out for the fundraising event! We are officially "on the books" for Saturday,
May 23rd. That is the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend but I still think we should be okay! The place is really neat!! We are going to try to sell 300 tickets. Carol knows lots of people out that way and it is the day after Lori's Birthday so she should be able to get lots of people to come out and celebrate the anniversary of her 29th with us!!!
Frankie's will donate our meal (Ziti, 1 Meatball, Salad and Bread) and we can charge whatever we want for the ticket price. Alcohol, pop, coffee (any drinks, really) will not be included but available for purchase. We can bring in our own entertainment (Carol and I have a few things in the works) in addition to any other fundraising options that we choose. We are thinking reverse raffle with side boards and maybe some basket raffles etc. (Does anyone feel comfortable soliciting prize donations from people? I think a silent auction or basket raffle would be great but we have to get the prizes! This is not something I have ever done before but I am willing to step outside of the box and give it a try!) The most important task right now is to get tickets printed and I have a possible lead for that to follow up on. If anyone else has ticket printing connections, please let me know!!
I think it would be a great plan for us to have matching team shirts for these events!! Lori, are you still up for T-Shirts and Hats?!
BTW- After talking to the manager at Frankie's(Rick), we had dinner and the food was spectacular!! I think it will be a great evening!

I think that Brian and I will plan our cookout/cornhole tourney etc for either July 11th or 18th....what date works for everyone?

Any updates on dates for the other events we're considering?

I would like to try to plan another get together in the very near future (look at you calendars for April) but in the meantime, this blog will be our best means of communication! Feel free to post any thought, suggestions etc!! The 16 week mark is around Easter....how 'bout a training walk April 18th, early morning? Can you all make it? Location to be determined!

Off to do math homework with Brandon! I am definitely not smarter than a 4th grader when it comes to math! Oy!

Have a good evening!

Monday, March 23, 2009

Whew! Time...it is a'flyin'!!

Hard to believe we are at the 19 week mark already!! We have all made progress this week in the fundraising efforts! Excellent job! I am going to meet Carol on Wednesday and we are going to talk to the restaurant that she spoke with a few weeks ago about some available dates! Will keep you posted!
I was actually able to get outside and walk a few days last week since the weather was so nice! It is VERY different than being on the treadmill!! I am looking forward to being able to get outside more often as the weather gets nicer!
Hoping you all are having a great week!!

I will keep my fingers crossed for your moms cousin! I plan to laminate some pics of those that I am walking for and pin them somehow to myself for the walk! Lots of people did that last year and it was pretty neat!

I got my socks today! They are VERY thick...If you are planning to get a new pair of shoes, I would definitely wait until you have these socks if you ordered them! I think that I am going to go to either Vertical Runner in Hudson or Achilles in Mentor and get fitted for shoes. If anyone else is interested,I have some info on a team fitting session! I will bring it on Monday!

Brandon snuck this when I wasn't paying attention! Praying for some nice weather soon so we can get outside!!!

Various Comments

Maria - I'm sorry to hear about your friends diagnosis. It does piss you off doesn't it...
My mom's cousin was recently diagnosed as well. She's already had surgery and is awaiting the results of the tumor biopsy to see what stage she's in and what treatments lie ahead.

This certainly does give us more ammunition to be successful in all our efforts.

Thanks Lori for the link to those amazing looking socks. I also ordered three pairs and I can't wait to try them!

Meeting

Hi Ladies!

I attended the Team Captain meeting tonight and came away with a few things....a few ideas for fundraising, training, etc....but more importantly, a renewed sense of determination. There was a feeling that came along with completing the 60 miles last year that Lori can attest to and I can't wait for Angela and Carol to experience this year! The feeling that we are all involved in something so big and so important. The message that in the 90 minutes I was in the meeting, 34 people would be diagnosed. 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. I came away from this meeting with that feeling.
This year will be particularly personal for me. In my past, I have had several family members that have been diagnosed....some I have lost and some are brave survivors....recently, I received word that a friend of ours has been diagnosed. She has a 10 year old son that is in my daughters class. For some reason, this news struck me very hard.....she is my age, her kids are my kids age.....now, not only has this disease attacked my family but, it is going after my friends and, pardon my french but, that really pisses me off! So, it is with renewed determination that I will attack fundraising and training and I am so thankful to have you all as a part of the team!
I am really looking forward to Monday at Cheesecake Factory!!!
BTW - We all have numbers "on the board" for fundraising! Angela at $1890.00, Lori $1020.00 Carol - $200.00 and me $400.00. You are all doing a great job!!

Monday, March 9, 2009

Socks!!

Thanks for the link Lori! I just ordered 3 pairs of the socks!! They got me with the claim of NO BLISTERS in a customer comment!!!! I walked 5 miles on Saturday and 4 miles yesterday and started to get some "hot spots"...I never thought I would be so picky about socks!

make it a double

Yesterday I signed up for a second 3-Day in Phoenix Arizona. I also sent my first donation emails out. I am a little worried about raising $4,600 but I already have donations/commitments for $1520 so not too bad a start for less than 24 hours.

Just a quick fundraising tip....One thing I did was post a note on facebook and tag everyone. I also sent my email request to everyone in my contacts. One thing I've learned is you've got to ask!

Please let me know if any or all of those dates work and I will pick the one where all of us are available! Cheescake Factory at Legacy Village would be a good mid-point if it's okay with all of you. I will plan a weekend get together soon too but I think we have a lot to discuss pretty quickly!!

Have a fantastical day!

Comments on Fundraising

Hey,

I think Maria hit on all the highlights for the possible event at the Twinsburg restaurant. They did say they would pay us an hourly rate if we'd bus tables that night as well. They will not allow us to wait on tables however. I feel it's a no brainer, they seem so nice and easy to work with....

I'm up for any type of fundraising - large or small. In addition to Lori's garage sale idea, the Pepperpike Community Center used to hold a "Junk in Your Trunk" sale which my husband and I participated in several years ago and did quite well. I could look into that again if everyone would like me too.

I'm up for meeting on March 13th. Just let me know when and where....

Fundraising

Hi...

I have had many, many thoughts on this subject and need some input! Is anyone interested in planning a large fundraising event like a reverse raffle or a night at the races kind of thing? Or should we plan on several smaller events?
- Lori has mentioned a neighborhood garage sale that her neighborhood has....
- Candy bars that we can buy in bulk at Sam's Club. If we got them out early and sold at $1.00 each...that would add up....lots of people like chocolate. We could even recruit willing family members or friends to take boxes of them to their offices to sell on our behalf! Brian just told me that he would take some to his shop for sure!!)
- A car wash? A couple of us have teenagers that might be willing to get a few of their friends together to help us with this one!!
- Angela has come up with what sounds like a great opportunity with a restauarant in the Twinsburg area that will sponsor our team for a night! The jist of it is...the restaurant will give us one night to promote our team. They will help us to print up flyers for distrubution. Any patron that comes in on the specified night with the flyer will earn us 20% of their total bill to go toward our cause. We can also hold raffles etc on that night to earn a few extra dollars. Angela, feel free to add on all of the details that I left out!

I would like to plan an evening when we can all get together and meet each other and discuss some of these details! How is everyone looking for Friday, March 13th?

Thoughts?!

Have a great week!!

Countdown: 24 Weeks

I can't believe it's actually time to follow the training schedule but here it is!!! 24 weeks to go! I will post this schedule weekly! This year, I would like to try and plan some training walks for anyone that is interested in walking together. Especially as the training schedule calls for 7+ miles! I have Sunny Lake in my area (a marked 1 and 3/4 mile path in the Aurora area) and Lori has access to the toepath trails in Stow/Hudson! Carol is relatively close to Punderson State Park and the Lake County Metroparks. Lets hope it warms up a bit soon so we can get outside!!

Tuesday 3 miles Easy walking
Wednesday Rest

Better late than never...

Last year I walked in my first ever 3-Day with Maria Douglas in our small but mighty team called “For Our Daughters”. Although neither Maria nor I have personally battled breast cancer we each had dear friends and family members who had. We knew we wanted to walk for them and also to walk for our daughters.

What an amazing experience. Maria ended up in a knee brace and I hobbled into the ER with blisters that seemed larger than my feet! Along the way I met some of the most determined and courageous woman I’ve ever known. I met one woman in tears struggling to complete the walk even though she had just finished her chemo treatment 12 weeks before. Another woman had walked in every 3Day event city in the country. Bystanders hugged us, thanked us, told us their mothers, sisters, wives were battling the disease. Even before we finished that walk I knew I would walk again the next year.

A year ago I walked on team “For Our Daughters” for the daughter I did not yet know. A child I only hoped to adopt one day. Today I have been blessed with the addition of a beautiful, healthy 2 year old baby. Nina has renewed and redoubled my commitment to help find a cure for breast cancer before she is old enough to even know what it is.

This year I walk, inspired by all whom I met last year, and for my dear daughter Nina.

PS: to all you nay sayers who thought I would walk but not sleep in the tent, you were wrong! I slept in the tent, used my pink Disney Princess flashlight, and even entered the dreaded port-a-potty! I’m not giving up my Four Seasons reservations just yet but it was kind of, sort of, fun.

Hello Ladies...

The site looks awesome - great job Maria!

Carol - nice to meet you - will be even better when we get to meet in person.

I am very excited to be a part of the team. It's going to be an amazing experience for a worthy cause!

I'm planning on sending out some of my fundraising emails today. I think I might call Beef O' Brady's in Twinsburg as well to see if they are still offering the fundraising night for groups. (They would give you half the nights proceeds to benefit your cause.) Will keep you posted.

Welcome Angela!!!

I am so happy that Angela Lucas has officially become a member of the team! I have updated the page with her photo and link to her 3Day website! She is SUPER sweet and will be a great motivator for the team!! I am looking at the calendar to come up with a date that we can get together, maybe for dinner, so we can all meet! I think it's a great group so far and we are going to have a lot of fun! If you know of anyone else that might be interested in joining the team, we would welcome additions!

Hey!!! You made it!!

Hey there!! Glad the website is working! I was beginning to wonder!
You can definitely make it 60 miles! As long as you are walking now you are warming up!! The 3Day has a training schedule that they send out once a week starting at week 24. Last year we didn't follow it "to the letter" and I think Lori and I both agreed that maybe we should have! Especially when it comes to the long walks on back to back days!! I will post those schedules on here too! As soon as the weather breaks, I would like to put some training walks together! We just picked up a new teamate....Angela Lucas...I will post her info as soon as possible! She lives out here by me but I thought maybe we could alternate some training....Punderson would be in the middle (kind of)...there are some Metroparks out your way or if you can come out this way, we have Sunny Lake. I will get something together in the next few weeks. Do you have a treadmill for now?
Fundraising.....we need to put our heads together to come up with some group ideas but START NOW!!! Ask everyone and ask big! Your school, your friends, your doctors, etc! I had several people that gave a dollar a mile last year! You never know who you will ask that has a very personal interest in helping this cause!
Post any ideas you might have too for training and fundraising!!!

Training

I've been walking everyday, but am not sure I can make 60 miles! Any pointers on training would be greatly appreciated. I know you're doing fine, as you have already been through this! What are we doing about fundraising?

Ready, Set, GO!!!

The holidays are over and I have started to turn my attention to planning for the 3 Day walk this year! I am excited that my cousin Carol has joined our team this year! It is my hope that we can expand team For Our Daughters by a few more! I met with someone this evening for coffee and she seems very interested! She's super sweet and would be a great addition to the team! My plan is to try and figure a way that all of the team members can post to this blog so that we can keep each other updated and motivated! Stay tuned for more updates to come!
